Greywater 101 class, Tues Jan 30, 2018

Greywater (or graywater) is any water that has been used in a home except toilet water, which is called black water.  This includes water that drains from washing machines, sinks, showers and tubs.  Kitchen sink and dishwasher water is sometimes called dark grey water, as it maycontain grease and food particles, which can cause clogging and slow infiltration into the soil.

The easiest way to direct greywater into your yard is from the washing machine, with the Laundry to Landscape system.  In 2009, California passed a new regulation providing for installation of laundry to landscape systems in residences without the need for a permit, as long as certain conditions are met. These conditions are perfect for sending the water to fruit trees.

Sweetwater is offering a basic class in Greywater Design and Installation for anyone in the community who is interested. This class includes a Powerpoint presentation, playing with mock-up parts for a laundry to landscape system, and considering individual questions about specific properties and their unique characteristics and challenges. Get the answers we don't have time to go into in depth at our hands-on workshops. Register now.

Laundry to landscape installations will be highlighted although other greywater possibilities will be discussed. A variety of options for design and installation and financial incentives will also be shared. We will also show some examples of branched drain systems.

Branched Drain in a Greene Garden Sept 2014

This was a unique project and a unique workshop. We wanted to do a greywater system from the washer; however, there was no space in the laundry room to put a three way valve because of the exquiisite cabinetry that we did not want to deface. Then we realized that the entrance to the crawlspoace was not far from the washer, and we could put a three way valve at that lower point- only it needed to be a larger valve, and we needed to do a branched drain (gravity fed) installation because we wouldn't be able to use the power of the washing machine pump. So we did. And sent 2" and 1 1/2" greywater pipes to the front yard, along the side of the house, and into the back yard to fruit trees there.  Below are the pictures of the story.

Now the workshop volunteers came together and put their shoulders to the wheel.
